Marketing lessons from a family weekend?

02/06/2025

Marketing Monday ---- Marketing lessons family weekend?
A family weekend is an interesting gathering that gives me several thoughts & observations.
In retrospect they might even provide some marketing lessons😉
Is such a lesson: routines over situation?

During a recent family weekend I observed that routines steered behaviour more than the situation that occured. Let me explain and why this can be a marketing lesson.

When several households spend a weekend on neutral grounds (holiday park appartments) there's several dynamics into play and daily situations differ to what one is used to.

💡 Waking up & breakfast

Some wake early, some sleep in. Noise echoes in holiday apartments, but early risers stick to their rhythm. Breakfast habits vary too—some at the table, others in front of the TV, or none at all. Although some alterations to one's behaviour was seen, it seemed that most did what they're used to, despite the expected group consensus of breaky at the table = routines over situation?

💡 In between snack, nutritional calories vs empty calories

Those who are used to a fruit snack tend to create such a moment.

Those who are used to a biscuit/crisps kind of snack also create such a moment.

But no, routines outweighed situation again, fruit eaters still reached for fruit; biscuit lovers still reached for biscuits—even when both options were served side by side. Offering only fruit slightly nudged behaviour, but routines were still dominant.

💡 Segments blend for a weekend

Various household spend a weekend together, it is likely that each household is a certain segment. A dance with routines occurs at new, neutral grounds although parental home routines form the basis.
This temporary, blended segment with routines in holiday mood gives several opportunities.
The question or challenge is how to anticipate on this?

💡 Clash of food patterns

This one had most of my interest during a recent family weekend, without judgement it is very interesting to observe the differences.

Every household has its specific food patterns that although from the same parental home, it is 1) combined with another parental home and 2) evolved over the years.

Food connects, but wat if the type of food a/o way it is consumed differs considerably that it disconnects instead? A clash of food patterns could negatively influence the experience.

From a marketing point of view, how to minimize this?
By meeting several needs, routines in the appartment e.g. divers set up of kitchen, dining area and available kitchen appliances?

Marketing lessons from a family weekend

📌 Consumer behaviour is more based on routines that on (temporary) situation, relevant for the effect of changing an unhealthy to more healthy food environment only will not do the job, longer term communication is needed as well

📌 Segments blend creating a temporary, holiday based, segment consisting of various segment eg healthy conscious consumer with unconsious impulsive consumer
